Which qualities are required to be a successful Miss Durban Township Beauty Pageant?

Miss Durban Township Beauty Pageant needs to be many different things to many different people. Essentially, Miss DTBP needs to be a people’s person as she will spend most of her time engaging with the many different citizens of South Africa and mostly of the townships where she will be serving her reign. She needs to be charismatic, enjoy conversing, organised, reliable and a team-player. To her sponsors, Miss Durban Township Beauty Pageant needs to be grateful and appreciative and to the youth, Miss DTBP needs to be a well-spoken, upstanding role-model who exhibits appropriate behaviour and a positive attitude. Finally, Miss DTBP needs to be humble enough to recognise that only one woman in the country is afforded the opportunity she has received and respect the enormity of her role overall.

How does Miss Durban Township Beauty Pageant function and what are her main responsibilities?

The Miss South Africa brand is owned by Esilite Model Management (EMM).
EMM not only facilitates the annual competition, but also provides Miss DTBP with a manager and support during the course of the year. Miss DTBP schedule is the responsibility of the Miss Durban Township Beaty Pageant Office, based in Durban.
Miss DTBP also has an obligation to her sponsors and endorses their particular products or expertise. Primarily, Estilite Model Management invests in Miss Durban Township Beauty Pageant by paying the license fees which enable her to represent the Province  nationally, in both the Miss South Africa  pageants.

Does Miss Durban Township Beauty Pageant have to come from Durban(Ethekwini) ?

No, Miss DTBP can come from any area of KZN Province, but during her reign she must move to the official townhouse in Johannesburg as this is where Sun International is  based.
Although she lives in Durban, Miss DTBP travels across the province and the country to attend various functions and events. Very often she will stay at Durban  in Kzn province.

Will entering Miss Durban Township Beauty Pageant clash with my university studies or tertiary education requirements?

Being Miss DTBP is a part-time career for a year. The winner takes occupancy of the official townhouse in Johannesburg and, subsequently, would not have to postpone her university or academic studies for the duration of her term of office .Many entrants are students as often women within the age bracket, 18 – 25, have enrolled at a tertiary institution of some kind and are working towards qualifying as professionals. SuEMM endorses the importance of education and every effort is made to accommodate the needs of those finalists who have academic commitments and examinations. The Miss DTBP final event is held in December each year, once universities have closed for the year.

How does the Miss DTBP judging system work?

Much care has been put into developing an adjudicating process which mirrors, as closely as possible, the two major national competitions in which Miss DTBP will compete: Miss Ethekwini & Miss SA. Judges are chosen for their expertise and experience within the beauty pageant industry and a principal judge oversees the entire process to ensure standardisation. Every elimination round is carefully scrutinised by EMM and NAMA to ensure that the outcome can be deemed transparent.
Firstly, women are invited to complete a formal application and submit * two recent photographs. The judges then choose which of the applicants they would like to meet face-to-face and these candidates are invited to regional interviews, which are held in centres throughout Kzn-Province. Those candidates who excel at regional level become semi-finalists and are called to what has become known as the workshop judging stage. After a number of days of lectures, guest talks, tutorials, practical applications and more intensive interviews, the top 12 finalists are chosen. These 12 finalists go on to compete in the live, televised pageant in December.
*The importance of excellent photographs cannot be emphasised enough.

What does Miss DTBP win?

Miss DTBP is the recipient of much generosity from her sponsors who, in turn, cater to almost her every whim. She receives a prize package which rivals the national competitions. The most important thing Miss DTBP wins, however, is an assortment of opportunities to grow, develop and give back to the city, province and country which she represents.

What is the most difficult part about entering Miss South Africa?

It is always difficult to enter competitions of this nature. Perhaps the most important thing to keep in mind is that so very much of it is out of your direct control. Different judges emphasise different qualities and beauty, obviously, can be subjective. Adopt a healthy, grounded approach when entering Miss DTBP. Aim to excel in each of the various judging rounds, but know that there are many other strong career opportunities out there besides the Miss DTBP platform. Do not give up hope.

What can I do to increase my chances of doing well when entering Miss South Africa?

Official scouts have been appointed in each of the regions to offer applicants guidance, support and advice. These scouts are specifically appointed and employed by EMM and receive a definitive brief in January each year.
Complete the application form neatly, clearly and legibly and ensure that copies of all the necessary documentation have been securely attached. Spend time choosing the photographs which you want to submit as this constitutes the first elimination round. Do your photographs show you off to your best advantage and do they definitely align you to Miss DTBP`s main responsibilities?

Do you have any tips for filling out the entry form?

When filling out your entry form, read it very carefully and check before you send it off. Here are some tips to follow:
  • Ensure that all information requested on the entry form is completed.
  • Entry form must be completed in a clear and concise way – it’s easier and neater to complete the online form.
  • All documents requested must accompany the entry form.
  • Accurate height measurement is imperative.
  • Photographs must be the correct size and not blurred.
  • Only 1 entry form per entrant can be submitted.
  • Automatic entry information must say which pageant was won and in what year - only existing title holders are eligible.
  • Do not fill in the Scout's section unless you have been specifically recruited by an appointed Scout.

When will the Miss DTBP finalists be announced

The 12 Miss SA finalists for the 2011 pageant will be announced in early December 2012.

Good luck! Please don't hesitate to contact us if you have any questions.
The Miss DTBP team would like to thank Estil Mpunzana from Estilite Model Management (EMM) for his assistance with these tips. Good luck with completing the Miss Durban Township Beauty Pageant entry form!
What We Are Looking For in a Miss DTBP Winner
Although times have changed since the inception of the Miss DTB pageant, the same qualities are still required for the incumbent Miss DTBP to be able to shine as a role model and ambassador.
The perception of this role and reality can sometimes be vastly different. The idea that a "Beauty Queen" is just for show and only judged on her exterior beauty is certainly not relevant in the search for our ambassador. We always refer to the "full package" which includes among other attributes, the inner strength and maturity to take on the role and be able to interact with people on all levels and social standing.
From the moment of completing the entry form, the "job interview" commences and this will eventually culminate in the winner taking on a position which will see them "working" for their sponsors, EMM, designers, charities, media and most importantly, for the Durban /Ethekwini city public.
One of the most challenging aspects of being Miss Durban Township Beauty Pageant is the hectic schedule and lifestyle which begins from the moment of crowning. We encourage a healthy way of life - with the correct eating and exercise plan - to be able to sustain energy levels and general wellbeing throughout her reign.
The most rewarding aspect of taking on this role is the joy of giving time and energy to those less fortunate and the heart warming and heart wrenching moments that are experienced. The value of the impact that you can make on the lives of so many people cannot be measured in monetary terms. Having empathy and compassion are key to making a difference.
A key focus of the pageant is to empower women from the moment they are chosen as semi-finalists to the possibility of eventually being crowned the winner.

Miss DTB Pageant Scouts

Miss DTB pageant scouts have been appointed in various regions around the country to search for potential Miss DTBP applicants. The role of the scouts is to recruit and encourage suitable candidates and ensure that they meet the stipulated entry criteria. Hints, advice, interview skills and their experience and insight into the pageant are all ways in which the scouts can assist candidates to be the best they can be.
Any Miss DTB pageant hopefuls discovered by the scouts are subject to the same judging process as all other entrants.

Automatic Miss DTBP Beauty Pageant Entries

Pageant winners and princesses from national and regional pageants that meet the Miss DTBP criteria are automatically fast tracked to the quarter-finals (interview round). For more details on automatic Miss DT beauty pageant entries, please contact Estil Mpunzana at estilitemodelmanagement@gmail.com  or missdtbp@yahoo.com.

Paper-judging

Through a process of paper-judging, potential Miss DTB pageant contestants are shortlisted and invited for an interview. All applications are checked to ensure that pre-qualifying criteria have been met.

Miss DTB Pageant Quarter-finalists

Once paper-judging has been completed, the contestants are short-listed and invited for an interview. These interviews, the quarter-final round, will take place at Selected Durban venue around KZN Province.

Miss DTB Pageant Semi-finalists

Semi-finalists are then chosen in each region and will gather at Sun City for further judging to determine the 12 finalists for the Miss SDTB Pageant. All selections are audited by a special body.

Miss DTB Pageant Workshops
Once the selection of the semi-finalists has taken place, the chosen candidates attend comprehensive workshops, many of which are practical hands-on sessions, at Durban. During this time, the Miss DTB pageant workshops cover topics such as media relations, personal branding, etiquette, make-up, hair, skincare, styling, health and nutrition and elocution lessons. This knowledge will equip these ambassadors with the skills required to take on the role of Miss DTBP.
An important part of the workshops is for all the candidates to have a full understanding of the role of Miss DTBP. The current Miss Durban/Ethekwini, Zama Xulu,  impart their knowledge and experiences as Miss DTBP and life thereafter.

Miss DTBP Finalist Profiles

Once the workshops are completed and the 12 Miss DTB pageant finalists chosen, their profiles are filmed and publicity photographs are taken for television and media purposes.
Then it's time for the Miss DT beauty pageant to once again thrill the audience at the Durban/Ethekwini as well as the thousands of South Africans that make up the home audience.
Please feel free to contact the team for any further Miss South Africa beauty pageant info
